Beauty in Harness: Carriages, Sleighs and Sedan Chairs of the 18th to the 20th Century
An imposing exhibition has just begun in space of the Prague Castle Riding School. The Prague Castle Administration produces one of the most demanding projects in history in terms of logistics.
The approaching autumn works as an invitation to Prague for thousands of tourists from the whole Czech Republic and also from foreign countries. Some of them visit Prague for the first time but very often it’s not their last staying because of the Prague’s magnificent beauty.
Tourists ask every year for new interesting places and events to visit. For Guides of Prague this means to consider new sightseeing tours. The Prague Castle set up an amazing exhibition, which attracts not only adults but also children from all over the world.
The Prague Castle Riding School opened its space for the new exhibition called Beauty in Harness. The opening was spectacular. Maria Theresa, the empress, arrived at the Prague Castle Riding School in a carriage drawn by six white kladrub’s horses. She welcomed all the visitors and guided them around the exhibition.
Through those spaces, visitors can see means of transport used in Bohemia, Moravia and Czech Silesia from the 18th to the 20th Century. They have the opportunity to take a look at seventeen carriages, various types of sleighs and sedan chairs, which are borrowed by castles, palaces and museums from all over the Czech Republic.
For the young visitors, there is a whole section full of toys regarding the theme of horses, stables and carriages.
An important exhibit is the gun carriage which accompanied T.G. Masaryk and later also Václav Havel to eternity.
The most expensive piece of this wonderful exhibition is estimated to reach 10 millions crowns. The carriage belonged to the former archbishop of Olomouc. Besides such opulent gold-decorated carriages, we can also see more modest ones because of their importance in history. Carriages were a practical means of transport for its reliability in long journeys to destinations, which were even tens of kilometres far away.
Tourists can also join a prepared programme including the chance to win a carriage ride around the Prague Castle. In addition, they can buy a photo of themselves in a historical costume or a book regarding the exhibition for 215 CZK. For children up to 15 years, there is prepared an art competition.
