Chateau in Lany

The chateau in Lany became the official summer residence of the Presidents of Czechoslovakia in 1921. Nowadays, it is the official summer residence of the Presidents of the Czech Republic.

The oldest written document mentioning the wooden stronghold Lany comes from 1392. During few following centuries, the chateau was the possession of many important dynasties. In the end of 16th century, the emperor Rudolf II. became the owner of the chateau and it was him who made it rebuilt to a hunting chateau. In the end of 17th century, the dynasty of Valdstejn became its owner and in the beginning of 18th century, it changed the owner again – to the dynasty of Furstenberk.

In 1921, Czechoslovakia bought the chateau in order to have a place for representative events and also to satisfy the needs of the Presidents.
 

This residence is connected especially to the first czechoslovakian President T. G. Masaryk, who spent there many years. After his death, the chateau wasn´t used very often. The next President who used the chatea frequently was the President Vaclav Havel.
 

The part of the chateau is also the vast park from 1770 and the church of the Name Jesus.

The spaces of the chateau are not accessible to public, the visitors may see only the park and the church. The opening hours are every Wednesday and Thursday, at weekends and bank holidays.
