The overview of the most interesting lookout towers in the Euroregion Nisa – in Germany, 2nd part.
This lookout tower is the dominant feature of city Herrnhut. It is situated in altitude 375 metres on the hill Hutberg. In good weather conditions, the visitors may examine the surroundings of city Herrnhut, but also the panorama of the Lusatia mountains, the Jizera mountains and the Krkonose. The city Herrnhut has very interesting history connected to the Moravian Protestant refugees. The Etnographical Museum informs about their presence in the city. Herrnhut is also famous because of the creation of traditional advent stars.
The date 1291 is very important for the city Zittau, because in that year, the gothic church of st. Jean Baptist was founded. On its place, there used to be a romanesque basilica. The church was reconstructed many times and the overall construction didn´t end before the first half of 19th century. From the terrace of the church tower, there is an amazing view on Upper Lusatia, the Jizera mountains and the Krkonose as well as on the very historical center of Zittau.
On the top of former, faded vocano, the lookout tower was constructed in 1881. One year later, the new chalet next to it was constructed as well. The lookout tower is made of bricks and it is 16 metres high. In the surroundings of the lookout tower, there is the Nature Trail of Legend, 5 km long. There are also ski jumps near by as well as the spring of the river Spreva.
In the area of village Schonau-Berzdorf, there was a vast recultivation and revitalisation of the mines happening from 2007 to 2008. During the revitalisation, the new, ferroconcrete lookout tower was constructed. It has 121 steps and it is 26 metres high. On the lookout tower, there are two terraces, from which you may see the Krkonose, the Jizera mountains and the Zittau mountains. In the village Hagenwerder, the visitors may examine the exhibition concerning the local mining and see a huge mining digger.
