Castles, chateaus and ruins in the Liberec region – 2nd part

The castle Kost, the state chateau Lemberk, the state chateau Mnichovo Hradiste, the rock castle and hermitage Sloup and the state castle Trosky.

The castle Kost

The castle Kost was founded at the edge of 13th and 14th century by the dynasty of Vartenberk. In 16th century, the castle was owned by the dynasty of Bilberstejn and the renaissance reconstruction took place. Later in 16th century, the owners of the castle were lords from the dynasty of Lobkovic – during this period, the southern part of the castle was built – nowadays, there are some farm buildings and a brewery. During the reign of Albrecht from Valdstejn, the castle Kost was his residence. In these days, the visitors will see the exhibitions of weapons, the torture chambre and a gallery of the dynasty of Kinsky – this dynasty is nowadays the owner of the castle.

The castle is opened from April to October.

The state chateau Lemberk

Formerly on the place where is current chateau Lemberk,  there used to be a castle founded in 13th century by Havel from the dynasty of Markvartic. His wife, st. Zdislava was able to heal sick people, so the well under the castle and the chapel are called after her. Near by Lemberk, there is also the Bredovsky summer residence. The most popular places in the chateau Lemberk are the chapel, the hall in renaissance style with paintures from Ezop´s fables or a vault from the beginning of 19th century.

The chateau is opened from April to October.

The state chateau Mnichovo Hradiste

The chateau Mnichovo Hradiste was founded by Vaclav Budovec from Budov in 17th century – the first chateau was built in renaissance style. After the Battle of White Mountain, Albrecht from Valdstejn became its owner and after the end of WWII, the chateau became the property of state. Current baroque decoration was created at the edge of 17th and 18th century. At the chateau, you may admire the library of Duchcov that contains more than 22 thousand of sheaves. The librarian here was a very famous women lover – Giacomo Casanova. The other very interesting objects are the historical theatre, the lapidarium in the church and the monastery with a chapel, where is buried Albrecht from Valdstejn.

The chateau is opened from April do October, in the other months, there is a possibility of a visit by prior arrangement.

The rock castle and the hermitage Sloup

The dynasty of Ron founded a guardian fortress above the commerce trail to Zittau in the beginning of 14th century. In the beginning of 15th century, the castle was possessed by plundering knight Mikes Pancir from Smojno, but because of his thefts, the castle was conquered by the army from Lusatia. For one period, the castle was owned by the dynasty of Kinsky and during that time, there was founded a hermitage in the area of the castle. The hermitage was abolished by Joseph II. The castle was opened to public in 1829. Until today, there is a statue of one of local hermits, Samuel Gorner.

The rock castle is opened from April to October.

The state castle Trosky

The castle Trosky has always been impregnable, because of its location on two basaltic peaks. It is a gothic castle from 14th century founded by lords from Bartenberk. Between its two tops, there used to be a palace, on the tops, there were two defensive towers. The lower top is called Baba (Old Woman) and the higher one is called Panna (Virgin). In 19th century, the castle inspired many poets and painters. Until today, there are only two ruins of the towers, but they offer and amazing view on the Central Bohemian Uplands, on Krkonose or on the Bohemian Paradise.

The castle is opeden from April to October.
