The Funicular in ZOO

Length: 105,9 metres, heigth: 50 metres, transport capacity: 720 people per hour, number of columns: 4.

The original plan from 60s of the 20th century was to build three funiculars in the Prague ZOO: children´s, ring road funicular around the ZOO and the funicular connecting the ZOO and Vystaviste. But this plan wasn´t realized and only one funicular was built – right in the middle of the ZOO. There were numerous complications during the construction of the funicular and that´s the reason why the construction works took five years. The funicular was opened in 1977, but during the technical control in the following year, there were realized some serious deffects and the funicular was shut immediately. It didn´t reopen until 1981.

The funicular is in operation from April to October, but only during the suitable weather conditions – for example, the speed of wind cannot exceed the speed of 43km per hour. There is a safety net under the funicular. The average number of transported people every year is 130 000 visitors.

Opening hours:
April: Tuesday – Sunday, 9:30 am – 5pm
May + September: every day, 9:30am – 6pm
June, July, August: every day, 9:30am – 6:30pm
October: Tuesday – Sunday, 9:30am – 5pm

Price: ticket for a person over 6 years costs 20CZK. The tickets are sold in the machines next to the entry to the funicular. Only the coins could be inserted. For a group of 6 or more people you may buy the collective ticket.
