The Funicular to Letna

Length: 109 metres, capacity of a vehicle: 40 people, height: 38 metres, transport capacity: 920 people per hour, in the order: 1891 – 1922.

The operation of this funicular started in 1891 at the occassion of the Provincial Anniversary Exhibition.Its line started at the place of current Bridge of Stefanik through the the Plain of Letná and its end was next to the restauration in the Park of Letna. There, the travellers could have transfered to the other lines of the public transport.

The funicular composed of the two-rail line and two vehicles from Ringhoffer. Firstly, the motor worked on the system of taking up and out the water, but the people living near the funicular suffered from the lack of water. It was decided that the vehicles will be powered by the electrical motor of Frantisek Krizik. With the new motors, one vehicle went down and the second one went up and made the counterweight. It was in operation from 1903 to 1916.

The funicular was out of order during the WWI and in 1922 it was definitely closed. Four years later, the electrical stairs were constructed at its place. They were used mostly before the football matches of Sparta or Slavia at Letna. The entrance fee was 50 pennies. These stairs were functional until 1935, when they were closed because of the serious disrepair.

The last parts of the funicular and the stairs were destructed during the construction of the Tunnel of Letna.
